It's the third Monday of June and that means it's time for the Stamp Review Crew Hop. We are a group of Stampin' UP! demonstrators sharing a ton of ideas focused on a single stamp set. This week we're featuring the Animal Outing stamp set from the Animal Expedition Suite of products. You have likely come from Ann Schach on your way through this amazing hop. If you get lost, simply click on the banner for a list of participants and get back on track.
This is not a set I would have chosen for myself. But when I attended the Stampin’ Up! Las Vegas On Stage in April, this is the stamp set Stampin’ Up! included on our bag. Since I had the set already, I thought I’d challenge MYSELF in creating with an unlikely set for me. Okay, I have to admit it was fun to color the critters. I also discovered I wasn’t as accurate as I thought I would be in the actual colors of these beasts. And just what is that koala bear doing in a kangaroo’s pouch anyway?!?!
Step by Step Tips:
- All of the banners were created Triple Banner Punch and a 2" wide strip of Whisper White card stock 4" long. They were stamped with Sahara Sand Cliasic Ink using the Burlap Background Stamp. The images were stamped using Memento Jet Black Ink.
- The Rhino was colored using both Smoky Slate Light and Smoky Slate Dark Stampin' Blends. The little bird was colored using Stampin' Write Markers in Melon Mambo, Coastal Cabana (Returning color), and Mango Melody (New color). All three of these colors are in the new Brights Collection of Stampin' Write Markers. The fine tip on the markers made it super easy to color the small image.
- The Kangaroo was colored using the Ivory and Bronze Stampin' Blends. I colored the Ivory first, and then filled in with Bronze. Afterward I went back with the Ivory Blends and blended the colors together where they met. The Koala was colored using the Smoky Slate Light Blends marker.
- Finally, the tall guy! The Giraffe was colored using the Ivory and Bronze Blends markers. I took the fine tip of the Bronze Blends Marker and ran it along the left edge of the Giraffe's neck. The branch was colored using the Bronze Blends marker. The leaves were colored using the Old Olive Light and Dark Stampin' Blends markers. I actually found the large brush tip easier to get into the sharp points of the leaves. The frog was colored using the Granny Apple Green (New color) Stampin' Write Marker.
- I used Grapefruit Grove (New color) card stock for the card base. The 4" x 5 1/4" piece of Designer Series Paper is from the Nature's Poem collection. I wanted to create a lot of raw texture since all the animals were from Africa. This DSP reminded me of tree bark. Of course the Burlap Ribbon was perfect for this project as well.
Here's a quick tip for you. Whenever I do anything with my Stampin' Blends I always stamp multiples of each image. I experiment with colors and a I don't want to keep getting the stamps out. So any extra stamped images go in the box with the stamp set so they're ready for next time! Simple!

That added burlap texture really makes these cards pop! Love this idea and technique.

What a perfect DSP to use with these beasties, Mike! Using the burlap stamp adds so much texture. Such adorable cards! And I wondered the same thing about the koala...

Oooo, I love the use of the burlap stamp with the burlap ribbon....texture on texture. And the “tree bark” DSP adds even more texture! Your coloring is fab!
