 It's Thursday and time for Pals Paper Arts biweekly challenge.  This week it's a sketch by our own talented designer Margaret Moody.  And I decided to make it my own personal color challenge.  I have always said inspiration comes from everywhere.  Here is a perfect example.  This is from the current Grandin Road catalog which is one of my favorites for inspiration along with Front Gate.  And isn't it amazing that many of the colors pictured are actually in Stampin' Up!s In Color color palette for 2011-2013?

Putting It Together Tips:

• The inspiration photo has so many wonderful elements that I just didn't know where to start.  I selected the Square Lattice embossing folder to give me that same rattan texture that appears in the photo and Chocolate Chip was the perfect Neutral for the job.
• I didn't have buttons that perfectly matched the In Colors, so I punted!  The Brights collection had close or complimentary colors to get the job done and a thin strip of card stock simulated the thread/ribbon.  The Calypso Coral daisy center doubles as the feature to hold down the sentiment.
• Somehow a single layer of daisy was not enough for the larger flowers, so I opted to use as many smaller sizes as would fit.  I love the dimension and texture it creates.

I always loved this set as I thought it could cover not only every season, but would work equally well for birthday, get well, Christmas, thinking of you - heck it's a “stamp set” for all seasons!  I decided to use my Watercolor Pencils for this post - my new favorite tool.  It's so easy to get great results using these little puppies.

Putting It Together Tips:

• Here's a big tip!  When you are using the Watercolor Pencils, practice first on a piece of scrap paper.  The pencil color is different depending on how much you use.  It also is not necessarily the same color as the pencil case.  I found I would color a pit on a scrap, use my blender pen to see the color I would get, and then if I liked it I would do the same thing on the project.
• The Blender Pen intensifies the color, so color a section with the pencil and then use the Blender Pen to activate the watercolor properties.  Then test your next area color, apply it when your happy, and use the Blender Pen.  Building this way will make sure you like the finished product.
• Once you have used the Blender Pen, you can no longer add additional color successfully, so be sure in your test that you like the intensity before you add it to the project and apply the Blender Pen.
• My intent in this card was to only apply color to the season I was featuring for focus.  You could do a whole series of cards coloring each of the seasons.

PPA97 - Thinking of You

Stampin' Up! Paisley Petals & Curly Cute

This week the Pals Paper Arts challenge should be an easy one.  It's “Do your own thing!”  The challenge is actually that you have to know what your own thing IS!  I realized that without some type of inspiration to get me started, it took me a while to decide what I wanted to do.  So when faced with situations like this I always gravitate to my stash of Designer Series Paper.  And this paper is a doozy!   Great color palette and you can'y help but have at least one of the colors in your card stock stash as an accent.  After all there are ten colors listed in the new 2011-12 Stampin' Up! Idea Book & Catalog.  You must have at least one of them!

Putting It Together Tips:

• One of the best investments if you use embossing powder is the Embossing Buddy.  This little guy removes the elements that make stray powder cling to your cards and ruin your creations.
• The double mat on this card creates a frame effect and that sliver of silver creates depth and a touch of class.
• Let DSP do the work for you.  This card was quick to assemble because the detail is in the DSP.  No additional coloring - no ink - no extensive collection of card stock was necessary.  The DSP does the design and detail work.  Swapping out the accent color from Cajun Craze to Old Olive would cool this card down in a flash.

PPA87 - Preview Memories

Stampin' Up! Paisley Petals DSP &
Define Your Life

Greetings everyone, and welcome to the Pals Paper Arts Weekly Challenge #87.  This week our challenges was to use punches and I can't tell you how my head was reeling with all the possibilities, but I opted to keep it simple.  I figured there would be plenty of cupcakes, flowers, and owls to go around so I decided to rely on one of our very basic punch - the square.  Actually I used both sizes of square punch and through some DSP and matting I was able to create a rather unique design, I believe.  Let's let the Designer Series Paper do all the work!

Putting It Together Tips:

• Paisley Petals Designer Series paper will be available for order on April 1, 2011.  This is a preview of the new Designer Series papers that will be in our new 2011-12 Idea Book & Catalog, but you can purchase it early simply by placing a $20 order.
• The three squares were placed 3/8'' apart.  I attached the DSP to the card stock first, and then turned the card stock to the back and marked the card stock with a pencil.  Lining up the punch was a no brainer after that and I didn't have to worry about the pencil marks showing as it was all done on the back.  I used the 1 1/4'' punch.
• Using the 1 1/4'' punch, I punched three squares in Old Olive.  Then using the 1 3/8'' square punch I punched around the first hole to create the delicate frame that was glued around the opening of the three punches on the card base.
• Using the 1 1/4'' DSP squares that I punched out in the first step, I matted them with Certainly Celery using the 1 3/8'' punch.  I also matted three squares of Old Olive the same way and randomly positioned them across the bottom of the card.  A ribbon finished the look.
• After applying a piece of DSP to the Very Vanilla card base, Dimensionals were placed on the back of the card component and positioned over the DSP.  It beautifully frames the DSP and gives the card some dimension.  The sentiment was printed in Cherry Cobbler and matted in Old Olive.

Putting It Together Tips:

• The orientation of the design in the Finial Press embossing folder is Landscape, but I needed it portrait.  Because the bottom of the Blushing Bride card stock was being covered by Designer Series Paper, I placed the Blushing Bride card stock sideways to give me the correct orientation.

Pals Paper Arts Challenge #61 - You're On My Mind

Sympathy cards seem to be the most difficult for me to create.  Maybe it's the circumstance surrounding the event, or that fact that sometimes there just aren't the words to say.  With this week's sketch challenge By Margaret Moody, I took the opportunity to create a “sympathy” card for my dear friend Lisa on the loss of her mother.

Putting It Together Tips:

• This project is pretty straight forward.  I have never liked DSP just floating over card stock, so I always mat mine.  This was matted on a piece of Crumb Cake card stock that was 1/8“ larger than the DSP.  This gave me a 1/16” narrow border around the DSP that gives the paper a “frame.”
• Intense embossing folders like Square Lattice tend to “shrink” the paper.   You'll notice the margins on the top and the bottom of the card are slightly larger than the side margins.  The Soft Suede card stock started out like the mat for the DSP - exactly 1/16“ larger on all sides.  If you want that scant border evenly on all sides, plan for it by cutting the paper 1/2” larger and trimming to size after you emboss.

Mojo 154 - Thinking of You

Stampin' Up! Summer Mini & Sincere Salutations

 You know how sometimes creating a card is like pulling teeth and other tImes it just all comes together?   Well this was a time for me where it just all came together.  I knew before I ever saw the sketch i wanted to use as much from the Summer Mini as I could.  (Tomorrow is the last day for ordering from the Summer Mini)  So my inspiration for this creation started once again with my stash of Designer Series Paper.  Using the color palette I grabbed the necessary solid colors to compliment the design and then went to my Summer Mini collection of stamps.  What do you think?

Putting It Together Tips:

• If there was one tip I had to share with you it would be to use your punches upside down - ALL your punches!  I used the Scallop Edge Border punch and was able to create  the scallop mat with corners and all.  I actually started with a larger piece of card stock than I needed and punched two sides creating one corner.  Then just decided which scallop I wanted to be the next corner and worked from there.
• Remember that with the Square Lattice Impressions Embossing Folder the paper actually shrinks due to the high detail.  I lost about an eighth of an inch.  Allow for that if you cut your paper to size before you emboss.
• Nothing like a thin strip of card stock to create a “thread” for the button and a “body” for the butterfly!
• When applying satin ribbon to a Square Lattice embossed piece of card stock, DO NOT apply the SNAIL to the lattice.  SNAIL conforms to the surface of the base as does the satin ribbon.  You'll see the ribbon actuallY mold into all the texture on the card stock and that detracts from the finished look of the card.  I found that out the hard way!  Hmmmm....
• Mini Glue Dots are perfect to hold those buttons to the face of your card!

Stampin' Up! Greenhouse Garden & Perfect Punches

Putting It Together Tips:

• One thing I always do when I'm working with a two step stampin' technique is to use vellum for the second image alignment.  That way I can store the vellum image with the stamp set and use it over and over again.  Just mark which edges touched the Stamp-a-ma-jig for easy alignment.
• I wanted to simulate the fabric without duplicating it, so I opted for more graphically bold images like the pacific Point flowers than to try and shade to recreate the nuances of the inspiration picture.  I thought these flowers so far away from the main color palette added some interest to the design.
• Using Dimensionals to pop up only a few flowers gives the card some dimension without making everything stand away from the card base.  It also allows an easier means by which to tuck background components in.
• I used a Certainly celery marker to give the leaves some texture with out concentrating on fine detail.  This again adds to the texture of the composition without overpowering it with detail.

Mojo Monday 151- For You

Sometimes things are better upside down!  Take this week's Mojo Monday.  I liked the sketch, but the stamp set I wanted to use just didn't work like that.  However when I turned the design upside dow - PERFECT!

Putting It Together Tips:

• All three shades or orange were used to color the roses.  Cajun Craze was used for the rose centers and for shadow shading.  All coloring was done with a Blender Pen.
• The Whisper White card stock was too bright to leave it alone and very vanilla was too muted.  So I used the Color Spritzed Tool (pg 195 of the IBC) to ad some specks to soften the background a bit.  I also used Saraha Sand to give the flower cluster some depth by adding it as a shadow in the background.
• Glue dots were used to adhere the button to the cardstock and to the ribbon to keep it from moving.

Celebrate Good Times & Friends

Stampin' Up! Perfect Punches & Celebrations DSP

It's Sunday night and I'm already going through Convention withdrawal!  So many incredible ideas, so many incredible friends - old and new, so many incredible changes to my blog you'll see over the coming weeks.  I will truly do what the theme for the Convention was - Share What You Love!

On Friday night the Pals that attended the Convention gathered for dinner and did a project swap.  The pictures below were taken of my swap.  My goal: one stamp set, one Designer Series Paper, and a simple design that was easy to recreate.  The one caveat is that I used a ton of punches and Big Shot dies.  But I tell my card club that it is always wise to invest in tools, those items that can be used over and over and are truly an investment in your hobby or business.  And technically you could always cut these out by hand with a pair of Paper Snips (another good investment) until you had the full battery of punches and dies!

I also created a little  Pizza Box perfect to gift these little babies in.  Please see the bottom of this post.  I plan on making a video with directions on how to create these boxes for any size project.

Putting It Together Tips:

• I used 12" x 12" Whisper White Card Stock.  I scored at 3" and 9" first.  Then I cut at the 6" position.  Stack the two resulting pieces and cut across the score lines and 3", 6", and 9".  The results is eight 3"x3" folded gift cards.
• I work on all my cards flat and then fold them after the card faces are complete.  But because these cards are all matted on 2 7/8" x 2 7/8" pieces of card stock, it really doesn't matter.  The DSP is cut 2 3/4" x 2 3/4".
• The Scallop Border trim was created by starting with a 3/4" strip of card stock passed through the punch.
•  The pizza box window was cut Clearits Scallop Rectangle die after the scoring was done by positioning the clear die in position face down on the paper and securing it with a piece of painter's tape.  This ensures the die stays in position.  I then flipped the card stock over so that the die was face up and passed it through the Big Shot as usual using the Multi-purpose Platform and cutting plates.
