PPA38 - A KISS of Spring In The Air

A preview of the new Stampin' Up! Square Lattice Textured Impressions Embossing Folder!

The Pals' Paper Arts Challenge for this Thursday is a sketch.  The minute I saw the sketch I knew what I was doing.  And I knew it would include the new Textured Impressions Embossing Folder.  I love love love the Textured Impressions Embossing Folders, and the new Square Lattice is no exception.  These folders create such great texture (DUH!) without any effort at all.  Of course it does help to have the Big Shot machine.  A rolling pin just doesn't cut it!

Putting It Together Tips:

• One BIG tip I can give you is if you are not using Stampin' Up! Water Color Paper (105019), have your Heat Tool (100005) handy!  The water tends to bleed, so I was heat drying each flower before I moved on to the next!
• I think what makes this card work is the minimal amounts of color.  Don't get me wrong...there's plenty of color in it - just not a lot of each.  And the Certainly Celery is what pulls it together - in the leaves and in the matting.
• The addition of the embossing on the large white space is just enough to keep it interesting without becoming boring or overpowering!  Kind of looks like the basket weave doesn't it?  Intentional?  Hmmm.......

Stampin' Up! Nouveau Chic and Well Scripted Clear Mount Stamps

A few days ago I had someone ask me a question regarding masculine cards.  Unfortunately I had stepped away from my computer and was not able to respond to them in a timely manner.  For that I apologize.  So I thought I'd give an example of what I considered to be a masculine card without using an engine block or any sports equipment whatsoever.  I think masculine cards have strong lines, bold and/or neutral colors, and are simplistic in design.  And that's how Mike “MAKES" it!  (You Glee fans will understand that last comment!

Putting It Together Tips:

• I wanted to vary the design a bit by not using the Scallop Edge punch the same was as usual.  So I opted to create a ”ribbon“ using it on a 1” wide piece of card stock.  It created a “bead” effect that mimics the pattern of the Designer Series Paper.
• Using a minimal amount of More Mustard really doesn't introduce a 4th color, but more enhances the Apricot Appeal.  It especially works well as the lower layer of the daisy!

Mojo Monday 133 - Thinking of You

Stampin' Up! Impressions Folders and Embosslits

Just call me Bruce Springsteen!  I'm the em”BOSS“ing king!  This Mojo Monday I decided to rely on my Impressions folders and Embosslits die to give me the texture I needed sans Designer Series Paper.  Cameo Coral, Chocolate Chip, and Brass Brads make the card pop!

Putting It Together Tips:

• As amazing as this sounds, using the Impressions folders shrinks your paper slightly.  So for the Cameo Coral band, I cut it 1/4” longer than I needed it and then trimmed it to length after I passed it through the Impressions folder.
• I used the Polka Dots Impressions folder to pull from the three little dots in the center of the Petals-a-plenty flowers.  Many series of three in this card!
• Sincere Salutations is one of my favorite greetings sets.  It's so elegant and versatile.  I definitely recommend it for your stamping library.  And although Service & Sacrifice tends to be more of an armed forces type set, I have used the “Miles...” Sentiment for many crds including holiday cards.

Putting It Together Tips:

• Although I didn't create these masterpieces, I can tell you that shading the edges with contrasting ink makes them pop. Use Sponge Daubers pounced once or twice on scrap paper and then swirled into the punched shaped with a contrasting ink to get that great shading effect.

Mojo Monday 132 - Happy Easter

Well Scripted Clear Stamp Set and the Sizzix Daisies #2 Die

All I have to say is it's a good thing we're into spring because it would be VERY difficult to wok that Daisies #2 die into a Christmas Card!  (Not impossible - but hard!)  This die has turned out to be my favorite die double stacked.  This week it creates the circle for the template.

Putting It Together Tips:

• To give the daisies dimension, I used Pretty in Pink for the bottom layer and Blush Blossom for the top layer.
• I was getting a bit too PINK and needed something to give the card a little pop.  Old Olive Card Stock and Ribbon came to the rescue.  Just the POP I needed.
• I needed a vertical band that would stand out but wouldn't compete with the main pattern.  The Perfect Polka Dots Impressions folder was just the ticket.  It gave the band some texture without detracting from the daisies.
• Those darn daisy centers were a real challenge.  Just the plain circle was pretty bland.  I tried embossing them - naw!  Then I saw the dots stamp from the For All You Do stamp set.  Ruby Red on Cameo Coral was the finishing touch and repeats the pattern in the vertical band!

Putting It Together Tips:

• The construction of this card was somewhat tricky because of the layers and partial circle image (daisy).  I constructed this card in this order - Mat the DSP on the Melon Mambo.  Wrap with Old Olive Ribbon and lay on the Rich Razzleberry base.  Position the daisy and mark where the edge needs to be cropped.  Crop and mount.  Mount the DSP unit.  Attach the sentiment unit.  Attach the daisy center.  Attach the leaves and stem.  Attach the completed card front to the base.
• Although the old Olive did not appear in the DSP, I thought it was a great accent color and so I carried it through with the daisy center and ribbon.
• I used a scrap piece of vellum to correctly position the sentiment on the card stock.  It's clear enough to see what's below and I can just toss it afterwards!

Mojo125 - Rest in the Assurance

Refuge and Strength

Mojo 125 this week presented a design challenge that I decided to take in a bit different direction.  Instead of creating three different focus areas, I decided to play one of those areas down by simply cutting it out of the background paper and matting it.  I love the art deco feel of the Nouveau Chic Designer Series Paper.  I hope you do too...

Putting It Together Tips:

• After matting the background paper on Basic Gray card stock, I positioned the matted verse square on the face of the card and drew a light pencil line on the right side.  Then I positioned the 1 3/8" Square paper punch against the line and punched out the square.  Matted the square and repositioned it over the "hole" for a flat 3D effect.
• The ribbon was created by cutting a strip of the Nouveau Chic Designer Series Paper and matting it on Basic Gray card stock.  
• The flower center is a 1/4" paper punch.
• Every component on this card is matted for dimension.

PPA 26 - Love You Much

The Pals' Paper Arts' Challenge for this week is "Anything But a Card."  With the lead time between now and Valentine's day growing ever shorter, I thought I might want to kill two birds with one Big Shot and not only fulfill the challenge but also make a couple of treats for my friends!  Clever boy!

Putting It Together Tips:

• When using any heat embossing product on our window sheets, heat the Heat Tool up before you apply the heat to the Window Sheet.  This prevents the Window Sheet from warping as the amount of time it takes to melt the embossing product is reduced.  NEVER overheat the Window Sheets - you'll have a mess on your hands!
• Punch the vellum heart out of the Embosslits die and glue it in place with the 2-Way Glue pen.  Then punch out the center with the Full Heart punch.
• Sticky Strip is an industrial strength adhesive necessary to hold 3D projects together where there is stress - like a box filled with candy hearts!
• The wonderful labels that appear on the Matchbox project are from the Matchbox Die!

Mojo 122 - More Than A Thought

 The Mojo Monday Challenge for the 18 January, 2010 is here.  I had to improvise on the oval as I don't have a Stampin' Up! oval that large and I always want my projects to be exclusively Stampin' Up!  So I tried to at least keep the general shape by using a collection of shapes - the Flower Burst Embosslit in Basic Black and Crushed Curry.  (By the way, have you thought about getting 20% off all your future orders with Stampin' Up! and get FREE STUFF as well?  Ask me how or check out Join In On The Fun for the details.  There's no future obligation - DO IT NOW!)

Putting It Together Tips:

• I cut a little slit in the Crushed Curry Flower Burst to make it easier to inert the corduroy button. 
• It's much easier (I found through trial and error - LOL) to cut the Basic Black Scallop Trim element first and then measure the Razzleberry Lemonade DSP and Melon Mambo Card Stock mat to fit.
• The Basic Black card stock mat that the card front is constructed on is cut only 1/8" smaller than the card base.  This keeps the white card stock from becoming overpowering when placed against the Basic Black card stock.
