PPA36 - Color Challenge With Spring Colors

Stampin' Up! Awash With Flowers And Happy Moments

Okay - I was wrong!  When I first saw the new stamp set Awash With Flowers I'm previewing today, I thought to myself “I will NEVER own THAT set!  I can't see one redeeming feature in it!  No idea where - or how - I'd EVER use it!“  NEVER say NEVER!  As you all know, I love the challenges as I feel it helps me grow as an artist.  Well today is was a double whammy!  I was confronted with a color challenge PLUS my own personal stamp set challenge.  (By the way, I DID buy Awash With Flowers - AND - LOVE IT!)

And this card also falls under the category of “Something old - something new” as the Awash With Flowers is brand new and the Happy Moments is old as of today.  It was part of the Sale-a-bration promotion.

Putting It Together Tips:

• To create my own brand of Designer Series Paper I started with the Awash With Flowers outline stamps.  Always use odd numbers - so I stamped in the center top, and in the lower left and right corners With the ”morning glory“ stamp.  Then I just started filling in first with the flower stamps and then with the leaves.  The wonderful thing about this set is some of the images can be flowers OR leaves!
• I really like the Pinking Hearts punches but for some reason I just can't seem to stay away from the crimper when I'm using it.  So the band across the middle of the card was crimped for texture.
• The cake was stamped first on a 2”x2“ piece of Very Vanilla and then on a scrap of Barely Banana.  The flowers on the Barely Banana impression were colored with the Lavender Lace marker and cut out, and then mounted over the Very Vanilla with Stampin Dimensionals.
• TIP:  When mounting the crimped band I found it was much easier to run a strip of SNAIL the full length of the card.  Then attach both ends keeping the middle suspended.  Then ease the middle down.  This way the band doesn't stretch while you are attaching it and end up longer than the card!  (Speaking from experience!)

Putting It Together Tips:

• Although I didn't create these masterpieces, I can tell you that shading the edges with contrasting ink makes them pop. Use Sponge Daubers pounced once or twice on scrap paper and then swirled into the punched shaped with a contrasting ink to get that great shading effect.
• The Stampin' Up! Impressions folders make such a nice subtle background without overwhelming the project!

Putting It Together Tips:

• I've become a big fan of double matting - as most of you know.  I matt 1/8” smaller which gives me a 1/16“ edge around all sides.  Especially in black it makes the artwork pop!
• I always forget that the Matchbox Die has some great emblems which are intended for the top of the box, but which are slightly larger than any of the paper punches.  They're perfect for a larger sentiment or to mat to slightly smaller emblem.  In this case I used the large emblem as a matt for the scallop oval.
• The Horizontal Slot punch was a bit too big for my emblem, so I used 1/2 of the Double Rectangle punch to create the ribbon slots.  It slightly crimps the 1/2” ribbon adding another design element.

Pals' Paper Arts Challenge 33 - Bloom

Stampin' Up!'s Bella's Bloom & Definitely Decorative Elegant Trio

Now here's a challenge!  Use Certainly Celery, Garden Green, and Kraft colors to create a project.  The two greens were a piece of cake, but where to place the Kraft.  I found it made a nice matting for the card. And Stampin' Up!'s Elegant Trio Decor Stencils are the perfect size for card fronts.  Not being one to use something like this in my home, I was really glad they were sized perfectly for the A2 card size!

Putting It Together Tips:

• A nice juicy ink pad is key in creating this stencil.  BUT - pounce once on  a scrap of paper first.  Fully inked daubers end up being too much ink and make the lighter colors too dark.
• The Definitely Decorative Stencils cling to the paper so no tape is needed to hold the stencil in place - just a nice firm hand will do it.
• When using the daubers, pounce, DO NOT RUB!  It would be very easy to catch a delicate piece of the stencil and bend it back.  Once that happens the stencil is never the same.
• I love pairing unlikely labels together to make an unusual matt.  This is the case with the pairing of the Modern Label with the scroll label from the Lot's of Tags set.  This set has some great tags - definitely a wise purchase.

This card is one I learned from my Stampin' Pal Cheryl when I got together with her and some friends mid February.  (See some of her creations.)  I call her the queen of 3D because she really likes the dimensional projects.  Here is a perfect example.  I love how the chick's eyes peek over the “happy Easter” when the card is closed if you position the Chick and Scallop Oval just right!  Click the Pic-->

Putting It Together Tips:

Part of the charm of this card is the folded base.  It is created from a 8” x 5 1/2“ piece of Almost   Amethyst Card Stock scored at the 4“ mark.  

1. Placing the card stock in portrait mode in front of you and measure 1 1/4“ from the left and right edges.  Draw a light pencil line from top to bottom.  
2. From the top measure 2”, 5 1/4”, 6 1/2“, and 7 1/4” And draw light horizontal lines.  
3. Cut a slit from the 2“ mark to the 7 1/4” mark along the vertical 1 1/4“ lines.
4. Scores the lines created in step 3 between the 1 1/4” vertical lines only.
5. Fold your card in half at the 4” score line.
6. Accordion fold the remaining score lines to create the “shelf” that will hold the card components.  TIP:  The 4“ fold in the center section of the card will be reverse folded from the car base fold. 

This sounds complicated but if you click the image above, you'll see the score and cutting lines.  The insert card that says ”you crack me up“ is a 2 1/2“ x 3 1/4” piece of card stock double matted to a finished size of 3“ x 3 3/4”

PPA32 - Spring Fling!

Stampin' Up! Birds & Blooms and the Occasions Mini new 5/8“ Satin Ribbon!

Putting It Together Tips:

• Okay!  Okay!  So I totally cheated tying that knot.  I wanted to try something a little different, so I took a piece of ribbon and taped it to the back of the card and then I cut a smaller piece of ribbon and tied a knot around the first piece.  I trimmed the edges in double points and “BAM” - the perfect knot.
• I love the Birds & Blooms set because you get so many dies in one set and they allow for layering so nicely.  A few Stampin' Dimensionals here and there to pop the flowers up and you have a spring card!  
• And who would suspect the the flourish from the Baroque Motifs set could double as a vine?!  (Well, actually that's what I bought the set for!  LOL)

Putting It Together Tips:

• I actually imprinted the Inspire image twice because I needed that little bit of squeak room above the definition and below the word.  The Paper Cutter makes it super easy to trim close to the areas because you can see what you're doing!
• This card was a challenge in positioning everything like the template.  Using the 2-Way Glue Pen is wonderful because it allows you to reposition the components until they're JUST RIGHT!

PPA31 - Lullaby of Birdland

Scallop Trim Border and Corner Punch!

The inspiration photo for today's Pals' Paper Arts Challenge was called Lullaby of Birdland.  The theme was obviously all birds in various color schemes.  I opted to target the bird topic as the topic for today's creation.

Putting It Together Tips:

• Biggest tip I can make is if you are contemplating water coloring for the first time, Stampin' Up!'s Brushed Card Stock is definitely the way to go.  The surface is less porous so it allows extra time to blend the colors.  Perfect!
• Stampin' Spots is also the way to go.  When you need a lot of different colors - but just a little of a lot of different colors, Stampin' Spots fit the bill.  Twelve colors per pack at $22.50 is a real deal - about a 70% savings over buying the full size pad!
• The Scallop Trim Border Punch is such a great tool, but figuring out the geometry of what size raw squares will produce what size perfect punched squares was way more than I wanted to attempt.  Thank goodness for Gretchen Barron.  On her site she provides the measurements and directions for making perfect squares using the Scallop Trim Border and Corner Punches.
• Speaking of that Scallop Edge Border Punch, a scallop is the perfect size to thread a 1/4” piece of Stampin' Up! Grosgrain Ribbon through!.
• I used the Movers & Shapers Scallop Oval to create the mat for the Scallop Oval Paper Punch.  Simply cut a 2 1/2“ square piece of card stock.  Position it exactly over the die and place it in the center of the Movers & Shapers die and run it through the Big Shot!  Perfect!

Mojo 127 - Happy Anniversary

Scallop Trim Border in the Sale-a-bration Mini!

 

I was actually excited to see this Mojo Monday design.  It's one that wasn't so abstract for me and I immediately knew where I was going with it.  THAT doesn't happen very often!  The finished size of this card is 5 1/2“ x 5 1/2”  Here we go!

Putting It Together Tips:

• I try to use the paper I have.  Hopefully whoever gets this card will not notice the little spiders embedded in the Cast-a-Spell paper!  LOL  That said, a perfect replacement for the Designer Series Paper I used would be Groom Specialty paper (116478)  It has the same stripe and patterned effect.  (With no spiders!)
• I wanted a splash of color on the car so I opted to use the rhinestone brads.  You could use a color brad that was reminiscent of the year of the anniversary.  Ruby happens to be for the 40th anniversary.
• The diamond shape was nestled behind the scallop trim border by first attaching the top and bottom 1/2 inch of the brushed silver strips with 2-Way Glue.  This left the middle to position the diamond perfectly.
