PPA96 - Ahoy There, Father!

Stampin Up! The Open Sea & Nautical Expedition

Welcome to Pals Paper Arts 96th weekly challenge.  The big 100 is coming up and we're planning a big surprise for all who participate so watch my blog for the announcement.   This week it's a masculine color challenge using Cherry Cobbler, Night of Navy, and More Mustard.  The minute I heard masculine and Cherry Cobbler I knew exactly where I was going.  I love using DSP and our Summer Mini release of Nautical Expedition was the perfect paper collection.  I tried to use each of the colors in each of the components.  For the sentiment, I'm sorry but Brass Studs will have to be close enough to More Mustard!

Putting It Together Tips:

• This was a fairly easy card.  My first tip would be to load the Blender Pen often to get that intense color.  DON“T SCRUB!  It is not necessary to use watercolor paper with the Blender Pens, but loading the pen with ink often keep from roughing up the smooth paper surface in attempting to cover the area.
• Use the very tip of the pen holding it with the barrel almost perfectly vertical to get thin crisp lines.  Rest the heel of your hand on the paper. 
• Take advantage of light color as you get to the end of the ink load by making it an intentional lighter color area.  The compass ring is a perfect example of this technique.
• When coloring the water, leave white to simulate white caps.

Mojo Monday 155 - Crazy For Cupcakes

Stampin' Up! Crazy For Cupcakes & Birthday Bakery

This Mojo Monday sketch challenged my use of patterns.  Four different areas of the card somewhat dictated four different color/pattern selections.  I opted to go with one pattern and two colors balanced on either side of the card.  The rich patterns and colors of Elegant Soiree were my inspiration!  It also provided the palette for a more masculine card that I think we are so lacking.  They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach.  I think cupcakes work!

Putting It Together Tips:

• I opted not to use the cake stand on the stamp.  So I covered the stand with a Post it and inked the stamp up.  I removed the Post it and stamped the image.  THEN I cut out the circle.
• I wanted the frosting to have some dimension, so I used the Blender Pen to apply Crumb Caked to areas of the frosting to shade and provide a bit of depth.
• The great little tag from the Birthday Bakery set was perfect for this card.  But it had sprinkles on it and the other cupcakes didn't.  NO PROBLEM!  Adding the specks to the Crazy For Cupcakes image created coherency between the two sets.  Coloring them the same brought it all together.
• You know me and my pop of color.  Nothing gives a better pop than Real Red!

PPA 54 - Happy ”Think Big“ Birthday

Stampin' Up! Studio Sketches & Word Play

Simple and masculine.  I know they go together but can I do both in the same card?  Once I got started I had a hard time stopping!  So I decided to share two cards with you - a serious one and a ”not so“ serious one.  I am however going to repeat myself when I say that Travel Journal Designer Series Paper from the Summer Mini is wonderful for masculine cards.  And in my opinion Celebrations from the Idea Book & Catalog is a very close second.

Putting It Together Tips:

• I tried to keep “Happy Birthday” in monochromatic groupings.  The background features the color Crumb Cake primarily and so I used Crumb Cake for the swirl.  The Sentiment and image were both matted and stamped with Cherry Cobbler.  This card is asymmetrical.  The swirl gives it its balance although it almost appears as a background element.
• Wish Big is just plain fun.  A big red candle with a star flame.  The sentiment is stamped in Real red, but offset matted with the same scallop circle punch in Cherry Cobbler to give it a bit of a pop.  Having trouble figuring out how old YOU are?  Pick a number!  Or at least that's what the Celebrations paper suggests.
