Stampin' Up! Serene Silhouettes &
Tasteful Trim

It's time for the Pals Paper Arts challenge.  This week it's a color challenge using Daffodil Delight, Cherry Cobbler, and Early Espresso.  This was a particularly difficult challenge for me as I always think of flowers when I hear Daffodil Delight, but without a green, it's kind of, welL...a CHALLENGE!  As you all know I believe inspiration is everywhere, even on your computer desktop!  So as I was logging in this morning a looked at the wallpaper on my computer and I knew exactly what I wanted to do.  I took this pic a few weeks back when I was in Joshua Tree National Park at sunset.  I have always loved silhouette shots and then I thought of Serene Silhouettes and I had my card!  Tasteful Trim was added as an afterthought and my partner said it reminded him of his time in Africa!  All of a sudden I thought “Lion King!”

Putting It Together Tips:

• I started this card by brayering Cherry Cobbler to the top portion of a piece of Daffodil Delight card stock.  You have to brayer the color gradually by loading the brayer and starting to roll the color off the card stock.  This eliminates the harsh line on the project.
• I “juiced up” my Early Espresso stamp pad with my reinker and imprinted the first image on the brayered card stock and then imprinted the image again in the same spot on a scrap of paper.  I tore the scrap of paper to create the earth silhouette making sure the “earth” rose to meet the mound that the tree was on.  Then I placed the scrap over the brayered card stock as a mask and loaded the exposed card stock with Early Espresso using the brayer.
• The sentiment component created with a Labels Framelit and the Tasteful Trim zig zag accents were edged with Early Espresso to make them pop.  Load up the Sponge Dauber and lightly tap the edge of the cut out.  It's better to tap lightly and add until you like the results.  Once the ink is on the paper - it ain't comin' off!!!

Flower, Daisies #2

 It's Thursday and time for Pals Paper Arts biweekly challenge.  This week it's a sketch by our own talented designer Margaret Moody.  And I decided to make it my own personal color challenge.  I have always said inspiration comes from everywhere.  Here is a perfect example.  This is from the current Grandin Road catalog which is one of my favorites for inspiration along with Front Gate.  And isn't it amazing that many of the colors pictured are actually in Stampin' Up!s In Color color palette for 2011-2013?

Putting It Together Tips:

• The inspiration photo has so many wonderful elements that I just didn't know where to start.  I selected the Square Lattice embossing folder to give me that same rattan texture that appears in the photo and Chocolate Chip was the perfect Neutral for the job.
• I didn't have buttons that perfectly matched the In Colors, so I punted!  The Brights collection had close or complimentary colors to get the job done and a thin strip of card stock simulated the thread/ribbon.  The Calypso Coral daisy center doubles as the feature to hold down the sentiment.
• Somehow a single layer of daisy was not enough for the larger flowers, so I opted to use as many smaller sizes as would fit.  I love the dimension and texture it creates.

You all are probably thinking that I live at Starbuck's.  I don't!  However I do visit it regularly and I am always impressed by the quality of their graphics.  If you recall a few weeks back I posted a card inspired by the pastry bag I received my cookie in.  Today my inspiration is from the gift cards available at the register.  Starbuck's artwork displays a wide range of color and design.  And for those of you that follow my blog regularly, you'll have to admit this is quite a departure from my usual style.   But it was a blast to create and I even tried a new technique.  Stay tuned for my video on Brayering!

Putting It Together Tips:

• The background was created by applying (starting from the top) Melon Mambo, Real Red, Pumpkin Pie, and Melon Mambo to Glossy White card stock.  The glossy card stock allows you to blend the ink together with a brayer.  The Pumpkin Pie is actually much brighter in person. 
• The Pretty Petals graphic was applied twice using Cherry Cobbler Classic - once in one direction, and then again in the opposite direction.
• The leaf graphics were applied by cutting out the individual leaves with Paper Snips once stamped on the colored card stock.
• The edges of the sentiment were shaded by applying Cherry Cobbler  in a circular motion with a sponge dauber.

Just Believe Inspiration Is Everywhere!

Stampin' Up! Just Believe and Word Play

So many people have asked me where I get my inspiration.  I guess I never really think about it, I just create.  But the question began to haunt me.  Where DO I get my ideas.  After the Stampin' Up! Convention in July I made a stop in San Francisco and was in line at a Starbuck's thinking about that very question.  I placed my order and was adding stuff to my half caff when I looked down and thought - Inspiration is everywhere.  You just have to be open to it.  On that trip I had my camera with me so as I walked through the city I just started taking pictures.  Inspiration was everywhere, from a dress in a window to a collection of pottery, and all the way to the shapes and colors of buildings.  You just have to open your eyes!  Then I ate the chocolate chip cookie!  :-)

Putting It Together Tips:

• One BIG tip I have is to wait for the Whisper White Craft Ink to completely dry before you attempt to print over it with the Old Olive Classic Ink.  I didn't do that and the Whisper White slightly bled through the Old Olive.  Live and learn!
• By adding the two strips of Old Olive Card Stock to the right side of the card face it balances out the composition, much like on the original.
• For this card I tried to come as close to the original inspiration as I could, however I could probably place the black circle more in the blank space on the right and achieve an equally balanced card.
