Okay, I admit it!  I HATE spiders!!!  I worked in a pet department for 6 years and during my tenure I handled every rodents and amphibian that a pet shop could carry.  Chameleons, iguanas, boa constrictors, meal worms (as food for the animals, not as pets) hamsters, white mice gerbils, guinea pigs, parakeets, finches, canaries, cockatiels, half moon parrots, love birds, and we even had spider monkeys.  I handled that all.  Then the taranchula came in and I left!  But this spider is the cute kind I'll handle again and again!  It was the project for my first card class of the season for Espresso Cielo the end of September.  And it's so easy to make.

Putting It Together Tips:

• Punch out / die cut the shapes that represent the spider web first.  Then position the cut outs so they are positioned on the center of the Spider Web folder.  Dimensionals pop the web of the card.
• There is a slightly larger space in the web that should be positioned towards the to.  This is the perfect place to position a set of eyes.
• Always cut an embossed background slight larger than you need and trip it to size after you emboss it.  The more complex the design, the more shrinkage you'll experience when embossing the card stock.

It's time for the Pals Paper Arts weekly challenge.  This week it's a technique challenge - heat embossing.  Heat embossing is perfect when you want to have a lighter color pop against a darker background.   Most people would have created an orange pumpkin with black features.  But I wanted to create the illusion that the pumpkin was aglow with the excitement of Halloween.  The Tangerine Tango Stampin' Emboss Powder did the trick!  That and a little Pinking Hearts picket fence and we have a Halloween vignette that's a Trick AND a Treat!

Putting It Together Tips:

• I started this creation by positioning the pumpkin just below the half way mark on a 4'' x 5 1/4'' piece of Perfect card stock using StazOn Jet Black ink.  Then I added the stem and vine.  Allow it to competely dry before you add the features using VersaMark and Tangerine Tango Stampin' Emboss powder.  The embossing powder will stick to the StazOn if it's not completely dry.
• Wipe the top quarter of a 4 1/8'' x 5 3/8'' piece of Basic Black card stock with your Embossing Buddy and impring the Happy Halloween using VersaMark and Wild Wasabi Stampin' Emboss powder.
• Tear the top quarter of the Perfect Plum card stock and adhere to the Basic Blac to reveal the sentiment.
• After punching a strip of Basic Black card stock using the Pinking Hearts Border Punch, run it through the Crimper to give it dimension and the look of a picket fence.
• I cut out the ghost using my Paper Snips after printing it with StazOn on Whisper White card stock scrap and attached it using a Stampin' Dimensional.

I couldn't decide whether to do 3D project of a card for this hop so I did both!  For the card project, I was more about the technique than the card itself.  I used quality of vellum to create a multi-dimensional effect.  For the candle project, it was all about getting that darn moon to light up the vignette.  Both projects add an erie feel reminicent of an old fashioned Halloween!

Putting It Together Tips:

• Although I used the same stamp for both projects, I didn't want the Happy Halloween which is part of the stamp to show on the greeting card.  To accomplish this I cut the adhesive part of a Post-it note off and trimmed it to only cover the sentiment.  After thoroughly inking the image with VersaMark I removed the Pot-it note and then imprnted the stamp on the vellum. 
• Vellum is a hard surface to heat emboss simply because of its somewhat delicate nature.  Keep the Heat Tool a minimum of 6'' away and keep it moving.  It may take a bit longer to emboss, but you won't scorch or curl the vellum.
• To get the moon to appear to glow in the card I punched out a 1 3/4'' circle of Daffodil Delight and slid it in back of the vellum.
• All the coloring of the pumpkin and the trees as well as the bats on the card were colored and stamped on the pack of the vellum.
• The vellum was mounted onto the Basic Gray card stock on the card using four brads.  This eliminates the danger of adhesive showing through the very delicate vellum.
• The votive candle used Basic Black card stock to back the vellum.  I simply punched the 1 3/4'' hole in the Basic Black card stock and then attached one end ONLY to the vellum.  I applied SNAIL to the surface of the vellum on the other end and wrapped it around the glass votive and secured it in place.  By not attaching both ends it allows the vellum to adjust in wrapping the votive versus bunching the black paper.

This week's Pals Paper Arts challenge is theme based.  Halloween is just around the corner and it's never too soon to "Go Goblin!"  

I decided this week to use some very traditional Halloween colors on a symetrical card and let the components frame the sentiment.  The components are all multiple stampings of a single image.  How'd I do?

Putting It Together Tips:

• The first thing I'll share with this project is measurements as I've received so many comments that you liker/need to get those.  The card is a basic A2 card - 4 1/4'' x 5 1/2''  The black matt is 4 1/8'' x 5 3/8''   The horozontal rectangles measure 1 1/2'' x 3 1/2'' and the vertical rectangles measure 1 1/2'' x 2 1/4''
• The Stamp-a-ma-jig makes easy work of alignment for the images from the Out On A Limb stamp set.  Most images were stamped twice except for the jack-o-lanterns which were stamped three times.
• Find the center of the black matt and imprint the sentiment, but not before passing over the sutrface with the Embossing Buddy to reduce stray powder cling.  The same is true for the other images embossed in black.

Along Came A Spider! Spooky!

When I first saw the Greeting Card Kids stamp set it took me back to my childhood.  Not that I EVER sat on a pumpkin, but it was so reminiscent of cards popular when I was growing up.  Dare I even attempt to recreate one?  No! So while this is a tribute to a Halloween "Little Miss Muffet" and those cards and times gone by, it has my own special twist.

Putting It Together Tips:

• To create the ruffled edge cut a 1" x 11" piece of Basic Black card stock and pass it through the paper crimper.  Cut a standard 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" piece of Pumpkin Pie card stock and score and fold at 4 1/4".  Using the Scallop Edge Border Punch remove one 5 1/2" edge.  Place SNAIL on the edge inside the card and place the ruffled Basic Black card stock to make up for the card stock removed by the punch and return the measurement to 8 1/2"
• I needed a scallop oval to mat the little witch on, so I cut a Scallop Circle and passed it through the crimper.  The Paper Crimper is a great tool for adding texture to all your card surfaces.
• The edges of the "Spooky" sentiment were created by lightly running the Basic Black marker on all four sides and jiggling it to create the jagged edge.
• The little spider is from the Sweet Centers set, but you could also just freehand one.

 

Quick & Easy Sweet Treats Table Decor

One last visit for the Sweet Treat cups - this time as a simple table decoration.  The punch out that's on the tag can also be replace with a simple circle inscribed with the guests' names for place cards.  Their 3" x 3" size make them the perfect size and the top fold keeps them upright through the entire meal!  (That is if they last that long!)

• M&Ms may melt in your mouth and NOT in your hand, but the oil eventually seeps through that candy coating, so fill these cups close to the function.

Give A Hoot For Chocolate!

Stampin' Up! 2-Step Owl & Top Note Die

On the fourth Wednesday of every month I get together with my card club to distribute their order and do a short training session.  Although handing them a bag filled with Stampin' Up! goodies is pretty exciting anyway, it's even better when there's something tied to the bag they can use (or EAT!) At the last meeting I made these little candy bar wrappers and tied them to their order bags.  I got the idea from one of my friends at Stampin' Up! Gwen Gibson.  She gave me this little treat at Convention this year and I couldn't wait to put my own twist to it.  Thanks Gwen!

Putting It Together Tips:

• I scored 1/8“ on either side of the Top Note die cut point to make it easy to create the little pocket that holds the candy bar inside.  Folding is a breeze.
• I assembled the pockets before I folded them.  It's much easier to create these while they are laying flat.  
• The Paper Piercing Tool not only creates a pilot hole for the black brads, but it also helps position the tiny black dot for the pupil.  (That's eye, not student!)
• I pierced the hole on both sides of the Top Note for the brad at the same time and actually secured the brad BEFORE I slipped the candy bar inside.  Much easier.
• The name tags were printed on my printer and then punched out with the circle punch.
• I am happy to report no chocolate bars died in the making of this project, and don't think that was easy!  These bars are the small 1/2 ounce size.

PPA 60 - Halloween Punch Treat

 Well folks it's that time of year again. Time to pull out the cauldrons and cook up something for dinner!  Wicked cool is fast becoming my favorite stamp set.  Here's the ”skinny“ on creating this awesome witch!

Putting It Together Tips:

• I'm going to skip all the obvious tips for this card and get down to the creation of the witch.  I punched two black Extra Large Decorative Labels.  One I quartered and used for the sleeves of the witch and the other I used or the body, but with some additional punching.  After punching out the label, I placed long edges back in the punch and punched it again.  This gave the figure to the witch.
• The witch's face is the bottom of the Modern Label Punch.  Her eye brows and lips were created by selectively inking up different parts of the bats cluster from the Wicked Cool Clear stamp set with markers.  Two dots make her eyes and a line and two parenthesis create her nose!
• The sentiment wast stamped on Whisper White card stock and punched out with the Curly Label punch.  I shaded the edge of the punch with Old Olive using a sponge dauber and then spritzed with Old Olive using the Spritzer Tool.  The finished punch was  and them matted with the Movers & Shakers punched out form.

For this Blog Hop I wanted to do something with the Sweet Treats Cups.  And what better set to do that with than the Sweet Centers set.  I used the same mechanics as I used last year to create a card that did not have to be destroyed to get to the treats so all our hard word doesn't end up in shreds in the basket.  This year however I added a little twist - bats in the hat! (EAT your heart out Dr Seuss!)

Putting It Together Tips:

• Check out my post from last year for the mechanics on how to construct this card.  However one thing I did differently is to mount the treat cup on the Perfect Plum and the add the stamped image over it after I punched out the circle.  This “sandwiches” the treat cup between the stamped image and the Perfect Plum.
• Make sure you punch out all your circles and scallop circle BEFORE you begin to assemble the project.
• I found that Whisper White Craft Ink was perfect for the cob webs.  They created texture without becoming distracting.
• DEFINITELY use Sticky Strip.  SNAIL works temporarily, but because of the weight of this project it doesn't have the holding power to keep this project together.
• The pumpkin face on the treat cup was created by stamping the image on basic Black card stock with Whisper White Craft Ink and then cutting it out and using the back side.  You can also free hand cut out a pumpkin face if you don't have the stamp set.

Stampin' Steps

For the Apacathary Jar

1. Cut a strip of cardstock 2" wide and long enough to fit around the jar with an overlap of 1/4"
2. Using the Scallop Punch, edge both long edges.  Wrap around the jar and affix with Sticky Strip.
3. Punch out a label.  I used the labels from the Stampin' Up! Exclusive Matchbox Die.  TIP:  I never throw anything away.  These labels were scraps from previous projects - PRECUT!  You might even use the Scallop Oval Punch from the next project!
4. Add decor to the top and bottom of the label and imprint with the sentiment from the Twick or Tweet stamp set. 
5. Adhere to the jar using SNAIL Adhesive.

For the Pillow Box

1. Punch out the Sizzix Pillow Box using Basic Black card stock.  Punch out the window using the Scallop Oval Punch.  Use the punch out for the above project!
2. Cut a piece of Window Sheets 1 3/4" x 2 1/2" and affix to the inside of the box over the Scallop Punch out using SNAIL Adhesive
3. Score the box before assembling.  I used a bone folder (102399) carefully for the curved end flaps.
4. Affix the ends using Sticky Strip.  Fold one end in and fill with candy.  Fold the other end and tie a 1/4" grosgrain ribbon to secure.  TIP:  If you don't want your "Trick or Treat"ers to completely demolish the box, tie a bow, not a knot!
