It's time for the Pals Paper Arts Sketch Challenge.  Our sketches are designed by our own Design Team member Margaret Moody and this one flags me down!  Literally.  As you can see there's a great big flag right in the center!  Cool.  Sketches are perfect opportunities to use Designer Series Paper because you are not limited to a particular color palette.  Also remember you can use the sketch either in portrait mode as it's displayed or you can turn it sideways for a landscape style card.  Either way this one's a winner

Putting It Together Tips:

• During Convention this past year I was lucky enough to see a demo on the Wonderfall stamp set.  I wondered how the heck you could get an impression of a leaf in the center of a die when I couldn't see the impression.  The answer is that you stamp the impression after you cut it out.  Cut out the die cut you'd like.  Ink up the matching stamp and lay it on the table.  Carefully position the die cut over the image and press in place.  If you have an acrylic block or the back of a wood block stamp to apply pressure, it guarantees a perfectly stamped (upside down) image!
• To make the flag, I cut out a 1 7/8'' x 5'' strip of paper.  Then I used a square punch to notch out the end of the flag.

Stampin' Up! Labels Collection Framelits & Stripes Embossing Folder

It's time for the Pals Paper Arts Color Challenge.  This week it's Real Red, Night of Navy, and Whisper White.  I usually add a neutral to the palette, but this week it was included for me!  Woo hoo!

My good friend Randy is interviewed for a new position with his existing employer.  He is so qualified for this position athat I know he will get it So I made the Congrats card before he ever completed his series of interviews.  Red, White, and Blue are so appropriate for a congratulatory card, don't you think?

Putting It Together Tips:

• Inking embossing folders is a wonderful to get texture and color all in one fell swoop!   Simply lay the embossing folder open on a flat surface.  For this folder I had to ink the side of the folder that did not end up recessed.  So the red strips are actually the raised image.  Place your card stock on the uninked side of the folder and carefully close the folder.  While maintaining constant pressure place the folder on the multi position platform with the first tab removed and sandwiched between the acrylic plates.  Pass it through the Big Shot and you have a very dramatic embossed paper.
• Using a sponge dauber I edged the small scallop circle from the Perfect Pennants die to give it some depth.
• I punched out two 2 3/8'' scallop circles.  I scored across the circles and cut in to the middle on both.  Pleat the and glue the ends together.  What a great 3D effect!

Celebrate Good Times & Friends

Stampin' Up! Perfect Punches & Celebrations DSP

It's Sunday night and I'm already going through Convention withdrawal!  So many incredible ideas, so many incredible friends - old and new, so many incredible changes to my blog you'll see over the coming weeks.  I will truly do what the theme for the Convention was - Share What You Love!

On Friday night the Pals that attended the Convention gathered for dinner and did a project swap.  The pictures below were taken of my swap.  My goal: one stamp set, one Designer Series Paper, and a simple design that was easy to recreate.  The one caveat is that I used a ton of punches and Big Shot dies.  But I tell my card club that it is always wise to invest in tools, those items that can be used over and over and are truly an investment in your hobby or business.  And technically you could always cut these out by hand with a pair of Paper Snips (another good investment) until you had the full battery of punches and dies!

I also created a little  Pizza Box perfect to gift these little babies in.  Please see the bottom of this post.  I plan on making a video with directions on how to create these boxes for any size project.

Putting It Together Tips:

• I used 12" x 12" Whisper White Card Stock.  I scored at 3" and 9" first.  Then I cut at the 6" position.  Stack the two resulting pieces and cut across the score lines and 3", 6", and 9".  The results is eight 3"x3" folded gift cards.
• I work on all my cards flat and then fold them after the card faces are complete.  But because these cards are all matted on 2 7/8" x 2 7/8" pieces of card stock, it really doesn't matter.  The DSP is cut 2 3/4" x 2 3/4".
• The Scallop Border trim was created by starting with a 3/4" strip of card stock passed through the punch.
•  The pizza box window was cut Clearits Scallop Rectangle die after the scoring was done by positioning the clear die in position face down on the paper and securing it with a piece of painter's tape.  This ensures the die stays in position.  I then flipped the card stock over so that the die was face up and passed it through the Big Shot as usual using the Multi-purpose Platform and cutting plates.

Stampin' Up! Punched Posies & Define Your Life Stamp Sets

It's that time of the week again!  Mojo Monday!  This week's sketch is relatively simple and lends itself perfectly to a neutral color palette.  I chose Basic Black and shades of gray to emphasize the butterflies in bright Yoyo Yellow.  I'm going to miss many of the Bold Brights, but the new Color Renovation Palette is dynamic and fresh so I'm already enjoying the fresh new change!

Putting It Together Tips:

• I always mat my main components with a contrasting color.  I believe that's where the “clean look”  I so often hear from my blog pals comes from.  T achieve this look without letting the mat take over the design, cut your mats 1/8“ larger than the component.  That means that if your component is 4 1/4” x 5 1/2“ like the standard card, your card front of 4” x 5  1/4“ would be matted on a piece of 4 1/8” x 5 3/8“ piece of card stock.  This results in a nice slim line of 1/16” around the component.  Perfect for accenting without overwhelming!
• To give this card more depth, I actually folded the butterflies -one in half on the corduroy button -to give the card both texture and depth.
• I love paper punches and Embosslits, but when the image doesn't have a corresponding punch or Embosslit, there's nothing like a good sharp pair of Paper Snips - a truly wise investment!
• I love using the Stamp-a-ma-jig.  Aligning the sentiment in the upper right corner was a piece of cake!

At first glance, this template looked pretty complex to me.  The first decision I made was that the two tabs on either side of the main square would be ribbon.  From there it was just a matter of a color scheme and again I relied on my old friend Designer Series Paper.

Putting It Together Tips:

• I inked the top half of the En Francais Background Stamp with VersaMark and imprinted a 5” x 3“ piece of Kraft Card Stock.  Then I cut it to size and mounted it on a piece of Not Quite Navy Card Stock 1/8” larger.  Congratulations is inked in Soft Suede.  
• Every component in this card is matted on 1/8“ larger piece of Not Quite Navy - the accent color from the Bella Bleu Designer Series Paper.  TIP: Check the Idea Book and Catalog for the color recommendations under the description of all the DSP.  (They don't call it an Idea Book for nuthin'!)
• The dark patterned blue paper is the reverse side of the light pattern so I only needed to use a small piece of DSP.
• Before I punched the hole for the brads with the 1/16“ punch, I threaded the ribbon through the slot and glued the two ends together with SNAIL.  It gave a more substantial base to punch and insert the brad.

Bermuda Bay Medallion

This is quickly turning into my favorite stamp.  I can certainly understand why it is a top seller.  Buy yours here.  This was a congratulatory card for our associate rector who was offered HER own church in the Seattle area.  We will miss her terribly...  

I used Taken With Teal for the cut-outs because I wanted them to literally pop off the page and it has just enough color tone difference to really POP!

Stampin' Steps

1. Cut a 4" x 5 1/4" piece of Bermuda Bay Textured card stock.  Imprint the Medallion stamp with VersaMark ink and dust with White Stampin' Emboss Powder.  Heat set.  Mount on a piece of 4 1/8" x 5 3/8" piece of Taken With Teal Card Stock with SNAIL.  TIP:  Okay I cheated a little bit here.  I actually performed steps 2 and 4 first on the Taken With Teal Card Stock being careful to keep the holes at least a half inch inside the edge and then mounted the Bermuda Bay on it.  No one can tell that there are three holes in it and it saves paper!  Shhhh!!  Don't tell...  Mount on a 8 1/2" x 5 1/2 piece of Whisper White card stock with SNAIL.    
2. Imprint the wreath from the Together Forever set and the pictured circle from the Circle Circus set on Taken With Teal card stock with VersaMark ink and dust with the White Stampin' Emboss powder.  Heat set.  Punch out the wreath center with the 1 1/4" Circle Punch and the outside of the wreath using the Circle Scissor Plus.  Punch out the circle with the 1" Circle Punch.
3. Position the wreath and circle on the Medallion using Stampin' Dimensionals.
4. Imprint the sentiment on a 1" x 2" square of Whisper White card stock and mat on a 1 1/8" x 2 1/8" piece of Taken With Teal card stock and attach to the car using Stampin Dimensionals.
5. Fold the card.  TIP:  I never fold the car until I'm completely finished with the card.  It is so much easier to work on a flat piece of card stock than it is on one that is folded.  I pre-score so I know where the fold will be and wait 'til the end!
