Welcome to Pals Paper Arts Challenge.  Twice a month we provide inspiration for card making.  This week it's a sketch challenge by our own Design Team member, Margaret Moody!  So grab your bag of creativity and get stampin!

One of my favorite country western songs is Lorrie Morgan's “Something In Red”  When I saw this stamps set originally featured in the Occasions Mini and soon to be released annual catalog, I couldn't help but think of that song.  Especially with one of the new colors being Gumball Green!   One of the verses says “I'm looking for something in green...”  And this new In Color is just what ticket.  And the new design stamp pads are incredible.  No longer do you have to push the stamp into the pad.  I light even touch gives a perfect even image.

Putting It Together Tips:

• The Petals-a-plenty background was created by rubbing Certainly Celery on the flat side of the embossing folder.  Carefully lay a pieve of Whisper White card stock on the non-inked side and close the folder being careful not to move the card stock.  Pass it through the Big Shot and there you go!
• There are several sentiments in this stamp set.  I mounted both sentiments on the same block at the same time.  I tested an image on a piece of scrap paper before to make sure it was straight.  It's the perfect way to reduce your card making time!

PPA129 - Forever And Always

Stampin- Up! Loving Thoughts & Apothecary Art

This week's challenge is a color challenge using two lucious greens and a color of your choice.  I chose to use Daffodill Delight to accompany Always Artichoke and Lucky Limeade.  The Occasions Mini provided both stamp sets.  I was thrilled to see that even the longest sentiment in Loving Thoughts fits nicely in the Apothecary Art medium label.  What a gorgeous combination and the colors can easily be swapped out to match the bride's color palette.

Putting It Together Tips:

• I used Lucky Limeade Classic Ink with my Blender Pen to add color to the leaves.  The lighter color ink worked well with the Basic Black shaded leaves.  At first I was thinking the flowers were apple blossoms, but when I looked closer I figured they must be roses.  That made a coloring choice not only easy but much broader.
• I stamped the image first and the used the Framelits die to cut out the image.  Much easier than the other way around.  I was actually not too smart in that I hand colored the whole image before I die cut it out.  Good thing the Framelits are so easy to use!
• If you're not familiar with the Color Collections DSP stack, check them out!  Four patterns in each of the 10 colors gives you a great selection.  I don't know if it's the guy in me or what, but I really gravitate to the stripes.
• Watercoloring can be a challenge.  If you've never done it before I highly recommend starting with the Blender Pen.  It gives you much better control of the color without saturating your card stock AND you don't need to use watercolor paper.  Any card stock will work.
• Of course I couldn't have placed my sentiment so perfectly without the help of my trusty Stamp-a-ma-jig!

It is a one year anniversary.  That's paper, right?  What a coincidence that I just happen to have "some" handy to make this simple anniversary card.  I wanted to stay as close to the colors of paper as possible while giving the card some interest, so I used Crumb Cake and Naturals Ivory.  The single stamps Bella Toile and Elizabeth go so well together, you'd almost think they were a set!  So now here's the question, what year is "ribbon?"  I have "some" of that too!

Putting It Together Tips:

• I wrestled with two versus three colors for this card.  I opted to do three and go with a slightly darker version of the Naturals Ivory by using So Saffron as an accent color.  It makes the sentiment really pop!
• The ribbon I used for this project is from the Clearance Rack and believe me, it's really a deal! Two spools of ribbon - 10 yards of 5/8'' So Saffron Grosgrain and 10 yards of 5/8'' Certainly Celery poly-twill - for only $3.49!  They are both current colors so they match with all of our other lines of So Saffron and Certainly Celery products.  And with spring coming, these are perfect choices.  Click on the link and buy a couple of them!
• The antique brass brads are the perfect color for this as they match wonderfully with the Soft Suede accent.  I needed something to balance the lower left corner and these sure fit the bill.
• The Mat Pack is a great little investment along with the Paper Piercing Tool.  They make quick work of perfectly placing brads.

Today is my pastor's daughter's wedding.  I received her rather unique invitation - in black, curious - a few months ago and of course waited until the day before the wedding to make the card.  (And buy the gift, actually!)  I had to include pics of Sarah and Shaun's invitation because I thought it was truly unique, and so - well - Melon Mambo!  It's a sad commentary when you start calling colors by their Stampin' Up! Color Collection name!  LOL  It means you have truly drank the Kool-aid, and I have!  ;-)  So I decided to just use the bride and groom's invitation theme to create the gift card.  So easy!!!

Putting It Together Tips:

• This card really needs no instruction.  It is pretty straight forward.  One thing I wanted to point out is this is another of the Four Frames images from a set which will appear in the 2011-12 Idea Book & Catalog, but which will be available next month for purchase with a minimum $20 purchase.  Stay tuned for the details.  For another one of the images from this set see Birthday Gala.  This set is so versatile.  AND one of the best things about being a Stampin' Up! Demonstrator is I get to play with it early and share with all of you!
• The inside of the card is equally simple.  This card could be for any occasion simply by swapping out the sentiment, and as you can see the selection of images in Word Play cover just about all of them. 
• I also included Teeny Tiny Wishes as a stamp set in this post even though I didn't use it because it has a For The Newlyweds image which fits in the frame as well.  I just needed something a bit less formal.  I love the Teeny Tiny Wishes set because every image fits in the Word Window punch and makes it a cinch to center perfectly and mat with the Modern Label punch.
• The Paper Cutter is a really great tool.  I not only use it for trimming/cutting card stock, but with the addition of the Bone Folder, it makes a great way to score card stock using the groove in the bed that the blade passes through.  It's higher quality than the ones you see in the big box stores as well so you'll have it for years to come.

Along Came A Spider! Spooky!

Stampin' Up! Greeting Card Kids & Wicked Cool

When I first saw the Greeting Card Kids stamp set it took me back to my childhood.  Not that I EVER sat on a pumpkin, but it was so reminiscent of cards popular when I was growing up.  Dare I even attempt to recreate one?  No! So while this is a tribute to a Halloween "Little Miss Muffet" and those cards and times gone by, it has my own special twist.

Putting It Together Tips:

• To create the ruffled edge cut a 1" x 11" piece of Basic Black card stock and pass it through the paper crimper.  Cut a standard 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" piece of Pumpkin Pie card stock and score and fold at 4 1/4".  Using the Scallop Edge Border Punch remove one 5 1/2" edge.  Place SNAIL on the edge inside the card and place the ruffled Basic Black card stock to make up for the card stock removed by the punch and return the measurement to 8 1/2"
• I needed a scallop oval to mat the little witch on, so I cut a Scallop Circle and passed it through the crimper.  The Paper Crimper is a great tool for adding texture to all your card surfaces.
• The edges of the "Spooky" sentiment were created by lightly running the Basic Black marker on all four sides and jiggling it to create the jagged edge.
• The little spider is from the Sweet Centers set, but you could also just freehand one.

At first glance, this template looked pretty complex to me.  The first decision I made was that the two tabs on either side of the main square would be ribbon.  From there it was just a matter of a color scheme and again I relied on my old friend Designer Series Paper.

Putting It Together Tips:

• I inked the top half of the En Francais Background Stamp with VersaMark and imprinted a 5” x 3“ piece of Kraft Card Stock.  Then I cut it to size and mounted it on a piece of Not Quite Navy Card Stock 1/8” larger.  Congratulations is inked in Soft Suede.  
• Every component in this card is matted on 1/8“ larger piece of Not Quite Navy - the accent color from the Bella Bleu Designer Series Paper.  TIP: Check the Idea Book and Catalog for the color recommendations under the description of all the DSP.  (They don't call it an Idea Book for nuthin'!)
• The dark patterned blue paper is the reverse side of the light pattern so I only needed to use a small piece of DSP.
• Before I punched the hole for the brads with the 1/16“ punch, I threaded the ribbon through the slot and glued the two ends together with SNAIL.  It gave a more substantial base to punch and insert the brad.

Mojo 127 - Happy Anniversary

Scallop Trim Border in the Sale-a-bration Mini!

 

I was actually excited to see this Mojo Monday design.  It's one that wasn't so abstract for me and I immediately knew where I was going with it.  THAT doesn't happen very often!  The finished size of this card is 5 1/2“ x 5 1/2”  Here we go!

Putting It Together Tips:

• I try to use the paper I have.  Hopefully whoever gets this card will not notice the little spiders embedded in the Cast-a-Spell paper!  LOL  That said, a perfect replacement for the Designer Series Paper I used would be Groom Specialty paper (116478)  It has the same stripe and patterned effect.  (With no spiders!)
• I wanted a splash of color on the car so I opted to use the rhinestone brads.  You could use a color brad that was reminiscent of the year of the anniversary.  Ruby happens to be for the 40th anniversary.
• The diamond shape was nestled behind the scallop trim border by first attaching the top and bottom 1/2 inch of the brushed silver strips with 2-Way Glue.  This left the middle to position the diamond perfectly.

Something Old - Something New - Happy Together

Happy Together and Branch Out

The minute I saw the Happy Together stamp set I saw a Valentine's Day card.  The little birds are perfect for a pairing!  And I just had to use the fence idea from my previous posting one more time.  This time I ramped it up a bit by "growing"ivy on it!  This also a continuation of my Something Old - Something New theme.  This time the old set was just recently retired but still one of my favorites.

Putting It Together Tips:

• To create the picket fence, I used a strip of Whisper White Card Stock 11" x 2 1/4"  I first stamped the leaves using the Pendant Park tree with HanDsome Hunter and Certainly Celery.  Always ink the lighter ink first and then the darker ink.  Then I punched the Pinking Hearts border, and then crimped the entire strip.  Now is the time to measure the size of fence you need for the card.
• I've started double matting my cards.  It gives them  really nice finished look.  I started with a 4 1/8" x 5 3/8" piece of Handsome Hunter and the matted a 4" x 5 1/4" piece of Bashful Blue on top.
• The hearts, sign, and birds are mounted on Stampin' Dimensionals to get them to pop off the page.
• Two strips of SNAIL applied to the Bashful Blue hold the fence to the card base beautifully.
