Demonstrator is the wonderful friend you have the opportunity to make.  Jessica is one of those amazing women who I have had the honor of “meeting” via my blog.    Jessica lives in South Carolina and has religiously commented on every one of my blog posts since we “met” several years ago.  We've shared happy times and tragedy, sickness and heath, and birthdays!  On Monday my mailbox was filled with a manilla envelope.  When I opened it, this beautiful birthday card and decorated notepad popped out.  A beautiful note accompanied it.  Thanks Jess, for making my birthday - just a little late - memorable.

I couldn't decide whether to do 3D project of a card for this hop so I did both!  For the card project, I was more about the technique than the card itself.  I used quality of vellum to create a multi-dimensional effect.  For the candle project, it was all about getting that darn moon to light up the vignette.  Both projects add an erie feel reminicent of an old fashioned Halloween!

Putting It Together Tips:

• Although I used the same stamp for both projects, I didn't want the Happy Halloween which is part of the stamp to show on the greeting card.  To accomplish this I cut the adhesive part of a Post-it note off and trimmed it to only cover the sentiment.  After thoroughly inking the image with VersaMark I removed the Pot-it note and then imprnted the stamp on the vellum. 
• Vellum is a hard surface to heat emboss simply because of its somewhat delicate nature.  Keep the Heat Tool a minimum of 6'' away and keep it moving.  It may take a bit longer to emboss, but you won't scorch or curl the vellum.
• To get the moon to appear to glow in the card I punched out a 1 3/4'' circle of Daffodil Delight and slid it in back of the vellum.
• All the coloring of the pumpkin and the trees as well as the bats on the card were colored and stamped on the pack of the vellum.
• The vellum was mounted onto the Basic Gray card stock on the card using four brads.  This eliminates the danger of adhesive showing through the very delicate vellum.
• The votive candle used Basic Black card stock to back the vellum.  I simply punched the 1 3/4'' hole in the Basic Black card stock and then attached one end ONLY to the vellum.  I applied SNAIL to the surface of the vellum on the other end and wrapped it around the glass votive and secured it in place.  By not attaching both ends it allows the vellum to adjust in wrapping the votive versus bunching the black paper.

Putting It Together Tips:

• The largest part of this project is resizing and reprinting the images from the Little Book of Coupons set.  You can create this entire project in My Digital Studio and use your inkjet printer to print the graphics.
• The coupon book itself is created from a single sheet of 12'' x 12'' card stock.  A few cuts, scorses and folds and you're in business.  Our soon to be released Simply Scored is an incredible tool which makes scoring a breeze.  1/8''  Score guides 1/8'' apart accommodate just about every possible project amd the tool offers score markers to easily locate measurements for multiples of the same project.
• I will be offering a tutorial on making this an a variation of this project so stay tuned.  It will be released in conjuction with the Holiday Mini catalog.

Butterflies Are Free

My Spring workshop for my teacher group was last Friday.  They always want a 3D project so I decided to do a trio of projects with a butterfly theme.  I really love Butterfly Prints as it has several butterflies to chose from AND they can be punched out with a Stampin' Up! punch perfectly.  

 

 

The treat bag was designed after a project that appeared in the Stampin' Up! Magazine for demonstrators.  I tweaked it a bit to fit my needs and then designed a greeting card and note card to match.  And you all know how I love 3x3 cards.  Nuff said!

Putting It Together Tips:

• For the greeting card, after punching out one of the 2 3/8'' Scallop Circles, I placed it on a scoring surface and using the bone folder I scored across the Scallop Circle intersecting the center on all scores.  Then using a Sponge Dauber I applied Soft Suede Classic Ink to the edges.
• To create the pleated background for the Butterfly Bag, I punched two 2 3/8'' Scallop Circles and scored as above.  Then I cut to the center (half way through the circle) and accordion folded both circles.  Next I applied 2-Way Glue Pen to an end fold and glued the two halves together.  In retrospect I probably would have shaded the circle as I did in the previous circle first to give more dimension. 
• The Embosslit Sweet Buttons die cuts were used both as decoration and for function to hold the pleated component together.  It was held to the bag using a Dimensional.  I will try to create a video on the steps to assemble this component in the near future.

Luck O' The Irish

Stampin' Up! Petal Card Punch & Got Treats

The minute I saw Mary Fish's miniature box made out of the Petal Card punch. I thought to myself this little baby has potential!  I warned Mary I would be using her idea, and of course giving credit where credit was due.  I'm not going to go through the steps to make this little baby.  I let you go to Mary's Tutorial for that.  But at the bottom of the page I'll share with you how I made it my own little “pot o gold at the end of the rainbow!”

Putting It Together Tips:

• Punch out 3 hearts from Old Olive card stock for each box.  Place the heart on the paper cutter with the point and V of the heart over the groove.  Using the Bone Folder, score down the line and fold the heart away from the score valley.
• The stem for the shamrock was created by using the heart punch and punching next to the hole on the side of the original heart punch.
• After referring to Mary's video, I suggest before you glue the box together you:
  • Imprint the image of the shamrock (inking only the shamrock, not the sentiment) in the square on each box.  Make sure the cropped off flap edge is always on the right.  Also be sure the concave or valley score side of the Petal Card is facing up when you stamp.  This is the outside of the box.
  • Holding the scored heart in one hand, apply 2-Way Glue Stick to one half of the heart And place the heart so that the point is to the edge and centered on the flap above the stamped shamrock on three of the boxes.
  • Glue the shamrock stem and position in the same way to the fourth side of the box.
• Assemble the box by applying SNAIL to the left flaps and glue the box together.  Box fold the bottom to lock in place.
• Imprint the “Got Green?” sentiment on Very Vanilla card stock.  Punch out using the Word Window punch positioning the sentiment to the right.  Reinsert the punched sentiment into the punch and trim down allowing 1/4'' from the left end to the sentiment.  It's time for the “eatin” O the Green!!!

Pals Paper Arts March Hop Into Spring

 These three little match boxes are great for small gifts for friends and relatives.  I love the pop of color the jelly beans (or jelly babies  - let's see who knows when we first found out that they were called jelly babies and what were they used for.  The answer will be in my next post!) gives it, but you could place milk chocolate Hershey Nuggets in the box and have a beautiful wedding or bridal shower favor.  I experimented with the window sheets and loved how you could see the contents without having them spill all over.  The Tasteful Trim double sided scallop is the perfect belly band for this project as they look like leaves under the daisy!  The plain box was passed through the Square Lattice embossing folder and brayered using Crumb Cake Classic ink.  Hoppy Spring!

Putting It Together Tips:

• If you opt to texturize the box bottom, use of the Premium Crease Pad is vital.  Under normal circumstances I found I could use the acrylic pads for most scored die cuts.  But the depth of the impression is so great with the Square Lattice folder that it literally falls apart at the creases unless you use the crease pad to cut out the die cut.
• A word of caution - texturizing the box bottom with the Square Lattice folder makes it somewhat difficult to assemble the box, so patience is really required.  The projects would turn out just as nice without the texture, but I just felt it added another dimension - especially to the white box.  For tips on brayering in textured surfaces, see Applying Color to an Embossed Image in the  Mike's Minute section.  
• After die cutting the Window Sheet band, I found I needed to use my Bone Folder to make the creases crisp.  Believe me, once you crease it with the Bone Folder, it stays creased!

3D Valentine - Part 3

Stampin' Up! Pillow Box Die and Full Heart Punch

As the holiday of love approaches, there may be many folks in your life that you care about, but let's face it.  You can't buy an expensive box of candy or flowers for everyone.  If you did that, you wouldn't have any money left for stamps!  But it would be nice to give them something just to show you care.  This 3 part/3D series will give you suggestions for a simple little remembrance that doesn't cost you an arm, a leg, OR a stamp set.

The third and final in this series features the Pillow Box Die and creates a delightful little pocket to fill just about anything - like a string of pearls (not my style) or gold doublooms (more my style**) and of course the perennial favorite, candy hearts.  But M&Ms or Reese's Pieces would work great too.  Let your imagination run wild!!!

Putting It Together Tips:

• When positioning the heart punch on the pillow box, be sure you allow approximately 1/4'' from all edges to accommodate the SNAIL adhesive necessary to hold the Window Sheet in place.
• After you punch the heart shaped hole in the box, fold the box and you'll see that the tab use to hold the box together shows through the hole.  Simply draw a light pencil line on the flap outlining the heart and then open up the box and trim with Paper Snips.
• Use Sticky Strip to secure the Pillow Box seam.  SNAIL will not be strong enough to hold the box together when you get candy in it.  Also for a more finished look position the Sticky Strip as close to the score line as possible.
• The use of Melon Mambo ink on Melon Mambo card stock gives a very rich tone on tone effect that is subtle while still adding texture.

3D Valentine - Part 2

As the holiday of love approaches, there may be many folks in your life that you care about, but let's face it.  You can't buy an expensive box of candy or flowers for everyone.  If you did that, you wouldn't have any money left for stamps!  But it would be nice to give them something just to show you care.  This 3 part/3D series will give you suggestions for a simple little remembrance that doesn't cost you an arm, a leg, OR a stamp set.

The second in this series is a bit more complicated, but could also be changed out for just about any occasion.  This project includes some basic stamping and features a very clever way to use the Top Note Die.  I wish I could take credit for this idea, but it was Gwen Gibson from Stampin' Up! who first gave me this item At Convention last July.  Enjoy, and thanks again, Gwen!

Putting It Together Tips:

• I scored the Top Note die cut using my paper cutter ridge and the bone folder.  This made it really simple to fold the 1/4'' bottom to hold the candy bar.
• The Top Note die cut was accented with the Baroque Motifs scroll to give the plain card stock some interest.  I masked the 1/4'' bottom and stamped the front and back separately.
• Although it's not easily visible in the picture, I used the Decorative label punch to mat the stamped heart.
• The top is secured by first folding a 7“ piece of ribbon in half and then folding it lengthwise to make it 1/8'' wide.  Then I passed it through a 3/16'' hole from the back through the front.  A different look can be achieved by passing it from the front to the back.

3D Valentine - Part 1

As the holiday of love approaches, there may be many folks in your life that you care about, but let's face it.  You can't buy an expensive box of candy or flowers for everyone.  If you did that, you wouldn't have any money left for stamps!  But it would be nice to give them something just to show you care.  This 3 part/3D series will give you suggestions for a simple little remembrance that doesn't cost you an arm, a leg, OR a stamp set.

This first idea is really simple.  It uses a minimum amount of supplies and could easily be made for a whole classroom full of kids.  The idea is simple enough that the colors and paper could be swapped out for any number of color combinations for any number of holidays.

Putting It Together Tips:

• The first  tip I have is to buy a Big Shot - preferably from me - if you haven't already done so.  Make that your New Year's resolution.  This is an amazing tool that really does pay for itself in the long run.  And it allows you to do so many different techniques.  All three of my 3D projects use the Big Shot.
• You don't really need the extended pads for this project because the bottom of the box is cut separately from the box wrap.  I opted to do the bottom in Real Red because  doing the whole project in Cherry Cobbler just seemed like too much Cherry Cobbler and the Real Red is a nice slightly lighter option that gives the project a bit of interest. 
• I fold the long sides of the bottom in first and firm all my creases with a bone folder.  That gives the box a nice sharp shape.
• I know you're wondering why I used Christmas DSP for this project.  It doesn't say Christmas anywhere on the DSP, it says Holiday.  And Valentine's Day is a holiday!  Plus this is a great opportunity to use up some of that Holiday paper!
• One spool of ribbon will do 30 of these boxes.  Talk about a bargain!

PPA71 - 3D Color Challenge

When I first saw the Celebrity Color Challenge for this week's Pals Paper Arts post, I thought UGH!  What in the world can i do with these colors for the holidays?  Then I started trying to think out of the box - or in this case, the carton - the mini milk carton, to be precise.  I had wanted to create a gingerbread house out of one of these ever since I first got it, so this was was the perfect opportunity.  Don't the Pear Pizzaz and Regal Rose shingles remind you of the Nikko Wafers?

Putting It Together Tips:

• The roof was created by cutting a 4'' x 1 1/2'' piece of Whisper White card stock.  3/4“ strips of Whisper White, Pear Pizzaz, and Regal Rose card stock 4'' long were run through the Scallop Edge Border Punch and glued alternately to create the roof.  Retain the 3/16“ scraps to create the candy cane striped trim.  Cut the roof in half to create both sides.  Cut a 2 1/2'' x 2'' piece of Whisper White card stock and score the 2 1/2'' edge at 1'', 1 1/4'', and 1 1/2''  Scallop Punch both 2“ edges and glue the roof pieces under to complete the roof assembly.
• I glued the 3/16'' strips diagonally on a piece of Whisper White card stock alternately to create a candy cane effect and then ran it through the Tasteful Trim die positioning the card stock to provide equal edges on each side.  The die cut became the corners and the scraps became the wall trim.  Half of a Modern label punch became the door trim.
• The windows were punched using the Jewelry Tag punch and run through the Square Lattice Impressions Embossing folder.
