Stampin' Up! Medallion & Beautiful Wings

Welcome to the Pals Paper Arts 100th Challenge.  There are so many things going on my head hurts!  There has never been a better time to Play at PPA because you could win a huge selection of Blog Candy.  Each of the participating Design Team members are offering Blog Candy all going to one lucky winner.  Imagine going to your mailbox and having it stuffed with free Stampin' Up! RULES:
Post your card to the Pals Paper Arts blog by Tuesday, July 5, 2011.  Incorporate your favorite technique.  Your card must be newly created for this challenge.  BUT you can use any product you have in your stash.  It does not have to be Stampin' Up!  The winner will be announced on Wednesday, July 6, 2011.  

My blog candy consists of a Designer Series Paper Pack - In Color for 2010-11, 1/4" white grosgrain
printed ribbon with repeating flower designs. Approx. 15 yds. and 48 flower buttons: 16 ea. in 3 colors. Approx. 1/2" and a 2010 Collectors Edition Stamp which was only available at the 2010 Convention - new and unmounted.

My technique is a masking technique using embossing powder to preserve the Designer Series Paper  pattern.  I also used the DTP technique (Direct To Paper) to apply the Basic Black Classic ink to the paper once the paper was stamped and embossed.

Putting It Together Tips:

•  This technique is very easy but somewhat labor intensive.  

1.  
   1. Imprint the Medallion with VersaMark onto the Woodland Walk DSP and heat emboss using the embossing powder
   2. Apply black ink directly from the ink pad to the embossed Woodland Walk DSP making sure that all the small areas in the Medallion impression are covered and no DSP shows through.
   3. Lay a piece of craft paper over the card and using a dry iron, press the craft paper.  While it's still hot slowly peal it away from the DSP.  Repeat this process until you have a clear Medallion image.

• One thing I noticed is this techniques seems to slightly discolor the DSP, so wait to match colors until the above process is complete.

PPA99 - Patriotic Birthday Greetings

Stampin' Up! Happiest Birthday Wishes & Celebrations DSP

The challenge this week for the Pals Paper Arts is a Clean And Simple Element of Style - Stars.  You may notice that I didn't use any.  Hmmmmm.  Okay so I screwed up!  LOL  I thought it was a patriotic theme and went for that.  Can we pretend that the scallop circle is really a pleated STAR?!  This week has been extremely stressful and I was lucky to get any card done at all so please forgive my lack attention and try to enjoy this creation. PLEASE?

Putting It Together Tips:

Because attaching a 3D embellishment like this is somewhat of a challenge,  here are the steps: 

1. Locate the center of the DSP matted card panel and “punch” two holes with the Paper Piercing Tool approximately 1/4'' apart.
2. Locate the center of the Real Red stamped image (I used the little loop above and below the H in birthday) and  “punch” two holes with the Paper Piercing Tool.
3. Cut a 8'' piece of  Linen Thread and using a large needle take the thread first from the back of the matted DSP through the first hole.
4. Thread the pleated scallop circle through the needle.  (The pleated scallop circle is two punched pieces scored, folded, and attached with Sticky Strip)
5. From the back of the small scallop circle thread through one of the holes to the front  and then again through the other hole to the back.
6. Pass the needle through the large pleated scallop circle.
7. Pass the needle through the second hole in the matted DSP
8. Carefully pull the linen thread taught and knot it.  Trim the tails.
9. Attach the entire component to the card base.
10. Apply Anywhere Glue Stick to the 1'' punched Pacific Point image and attach to the scallop circle to hide the string.

I hope I redeemed myself for not using a star!

PPA98 - A Cupcake For Your Birthday!

This week the Pals Paper Arts challenge is a Sketch Challenge from our own Margaret Moody.  I LOVE sketch challenges as they really CHALLENGE me.  I'm challenged by the color palette, DSP or no, and theme.  And whatever I decide it has to fit in predetermined little boxes!  That's usually where my challenge stops but this week I decided to actually do an asymmetrical gate fold card to represent part of the design.  And OKAY, OKAY, so I didn't choose to use a circle.  I used a cupcake.  But come on - if you had a choice, wouldn't you choose a cupcake?!  After all cardboard circles have too much fiber!

Putting It Together Tips:

• First a note on the new Hostess Program effective with the 2011-12 Idea Book & Catalog.  The structure has changed - and for the better.  You'll now earn Stamp9n' Up! Dollars exclusively so you can select to spend all your earnings on anything in the catalog.  There will still be exclusive stamp sets for hosting a workshop.  And no one will be able to get these unless they place a minimum order of $150.00.  But whether that order comes from you alone or is an actual workshop order, you qualify for the Stampin' Up! Dollars and an opportunity to spend those dollars on exclusive Hostess stamp sets.  The Happiest Birthday Wish stamp set used here is only $15 in clear mount so they are a real bargain considering this set is an 11 piece set! 
• Crazy For Cupcakes is probably one of my favorite sets.  It was one of the very first sets I used when I went “public” with my blog over two years ago.  Check it out!
• If you're interested in creating an asymmetrical gate fold card like mine the score lines are at 2 3/8'' and 1 7/8''  Of course the Rose Red pieces are 1/8'' smaller and the DSP is 1/4'' smaller.  The card height is 5 1/2''
• Although the shading doesn't show in the picture, I used Crumb Cake Classic Ink on a Sponge Dauber to shade the edges of the cupcake frosting.
• Using Certainly Celery on Certainly Celery gives some nice dimension to the cupcake liner without making it overpowering.  Of course there was only one color to use for the chocolate chip sprinkles!

I always loved this set as I thought it could cover not only every season, but would work equally well for birthday, get well, Christmas, thinking of you - heck it's a “stamp set” for all seasons!  I decided to use my Watercolor Pencils for this post - my new favorite tool.  It's so easy to get great results using these little puppies.

Putting It Together Tips:

• Here's a big tip!  When you are using the Watercolor Pencils, practice first on a piece of scrap paper.  The pencil color is different depending on how much you use.  It also is not necessarily the same color as the pencil case.  I found I would color a pit on a scrap, use my blender pen to see the color I would get, and then if I liked it I would do the same thing on the project.
• The Blender Pen intensifies the color, so color a section with the pencil and then use the Blender Pen to activate the watercolor properties.  Then test your next area color, apply it when your happy, and use the Blender Pen.  Building this way will make sure you like the finished product.
• Once you have used the Blender Pen, you can no longer add additional color successfully, so be sure in your test that you like the intensity before you add it to the project and apply the Blender Pen.
• My intent in this card was to only apply color to the season I was featuring for focus.  You could do a whole series of cards coloring each of the seasons.

PPA97 - Thinking of You

This week the Pals Paper Arts challenge should be an easy one.  It's “Do your own thing!”  The challenge is actually that you have to know what your own thing IS!  I realized that without some type of inspiration to get me started, it took me a while to decide what I wanted to do.  So when faced with situations like this I always gravitate to my stash of Designer Series Paper.  And this paper is a doozy!   Great color palette and you can'y help but have at least one of the colors in your card stock stash as an accent.  After all there are ten colors listed in the new 2011-12 Stampin' Up! Idea Book & Catalog.  You must have at least one of them!

Putting It Together Tips:

• One of the best investments if you use embossing powder is the Embossing Buddy.  This little guy removes the elements that make stray powder cling to your cards and ruin your creations.
• The double mat on this card creates a frame effect and that sliver of silver creates depth and a touch of class.
• Let DSP do the work for you.  This card was quick to assemble because the detail is in the DSP.  No additional coloring - no ink - no extensive collection of card stock was necessary.  The DSP does the design and detail work.  Swapping out the accent color from Cajun Craze to Old Olive would cool this card down in a flash.
